I LOVE FALL. It is by far my favorite time of year. I love the way fall smells, the feel of leaves crunching under my feet, the riot of colors brought about by the changing of leaves from green to fiery red, and to bright, burnished gold. The incredible feeling that comes over me as I journey into this magical time of year never diminishes with the passing years. I continue to be filled with a sense of wonder and joy.
With the coming of fall each year, I am reminded of a long ago published song titled “September Song.” It was popular in my youth, and remains stamped in indelible ink on my heart. This song has been recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Patty Page, and Madonna.
Oh, it’s a long, long while from May to December
But the days grow short
when you reach September.
When the Autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn’t got time for the waiting game.
Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November
and these few precious days, I’ll spend with you,
these precious days I’ll spend with you.
These words, learned so long ago, never fail to bring tears to my eyes. I look back at a well-lived life and remember so many “precious days,” spent with so many who are no longer here. It feels glorious, and I am filled with wonder for the beauty that surrounds me. I know that the days are growing short, and yet, I don’t mind. I know that these are the precious days given to me to do, to be, to live, and to share the beauty of love.
Love is like those vibrant colors of the changing leaves of fall. Bright, shining, and joyous. We, who have been blessed with the joy of unconditional love, have a complete certainty that, after a cold winter, spring will come again. Spring will come and will bring new leaves, new life, abundance of love. We only need to learn to enjoy the seasons of life and the joy of love.
These are the precious days I’ll share with you.
