As a child, and for most of my younger life, I attended Sunday school. In my family, it was always understood that if it was Sunday, we were all in Sunday school and then church. My mom played the piano in our church, and my dad was a deacon.
Perhaps it was because of this early training, or perhaps it was because of my own nature, that I learned to love memorizing Bible verses. I always won the ribbons or stars for having memorized the most verses. It should be noted that this was seen by some members of our church as being prideful – even boastful. The opinion was correct, I was both.
This love of studying and understanding the true meaning of the Bible continued through childhood and into adulthood. I can to believe that I had greater insight into the nature and expectation of God than most ministers, preachers, and pastors. I continued to be prideful and boastful.
As I continued with my studies of the Bible and grew in my understanding, I began to believe that God really must have a sense of humor. As a young woman of the early sixties, I was all in with the current women’s movement of the moment. I marched, burned my bra, and spoke out for equal pay.
How was I to justify my strong feelings for women’s equal rights with my Biblical teaching, learning, and beliefs? It was surprisingly easy.
I read about Queen Esther, risking her life to save her people, about Rachael and the founding of a nation, about Ruth, leaving her people and following her mother-in-law into exile with those much-loved and repeated words, “Whither thou goest, I will go. Wither thou dwellest, I will dwell. And whither thou loves, I will love.”
In the Bible, there are so very many examples of strong women who defied the conventions of their times to live a life that mattered while following their own paths to forge a better world.
And then there was, of course, EVE. Eve is an example of God’s humor. It states in Genesis that God made Eve to be a helpmate for ADAM. But is that the end of the story? Certainly not.
I think God knew the very nature of the males and females that he had created. Without Eve, Adam would have had to take responsibility for taking that first bite of the apple. There would have been no one to point a finger at and blame, saying, “She made me do it,” thus setting the tone and a pattern for all males to follow into all nations and the centuries that would follow.
Yes, I believe that God does have a sense of humor and we have only to look around each day to see the evidence of that fact. I believe that most of life is humorous and that it’s better to laugh and express joy than to live in sadness and anger.
I believe that God does have a sense of humor and laughs with us each day as we make our way through this WACKY and WONDERFUL world.
